bù yǐ qí wú sī xié?
gù néng chéng qí sī.
The universe is everlasting.
The reason the universe is everlasting
Is that it does not life for Self.
Therefore it can long endure.
Therefore the Sage puts himself last,
And finds himself in the foremost place;
Regards his body as accidental,
And his body is thereby preserved.
Is it not because he does not live for Self
That his Self is realized?
Explanation
Eternal: describes a long time without end. It is a metaphor for love, friendship, etc. that are eternal and unchanging.
The reason why heaven and earth can last long is that they do not produce themselves, so they can live forever: the reason why heaven and earth can exist for a long time is that they do not deliberately pursue themselves, so they can be eternal.
Therefore, the saints always put themselves behind and make themselves first, and always put themselves outside and make themselves live forever: so the saints always put themselves behind, but they achieve themselves; always put themselves outside, but they can live forever.
Isn't it because the saints are selfless? So they can achieve their own interests: Isn't it because the saints are selfless? Because of this, they achieve their own selfish interests.
Overall meaning
This passage comes from the "Tao Te Ching", which mainly expounds the idea of "ruling by doing nothing". The author extends the laws of heaven and earth to the behavior of saints, emphasizing the importance of selfless dedication and not competing for fame and fortune. Only by letting go of the self can we achieve greater careers.
Core idea
Rule by doing nothing: do not pursue deliberately, let nature take its course.
Put yourself first and put yourself outside: be modest and low-key, and do not compete for fame and fortune.
Selflessness: take the world as your responsibility and be dedicated.
Summary
This passage tells us that only by letting go of the self can we achieve greater things. Whether it is an individual or a country, only by not seeking personal gain can there be long-term stability.
